Treatment Options

Treatment exists for opioid use disorder! People who use medication assisted treatment (MAT) have similar success rates as people with other types of chronic health conditions like diabetes, asthma, or heart disease. The medications that treat opioid use disorders are:

  • Methadone
  • Buprenorphine
  • Naltrexone

For more information on each of these medicines, visit SAMHSA’s Decisions in Recovery website.

Find Treatment

The National Treatment Referral Helpline 1-800-662-HELP (4357) or 1-800-487-4889 (TDD) is available 24/7. Available treatment for a substance use disorder varies by community, state, insurance status, and the of substance use disorder. These are some resources to identify what is available in your community:

  • The national Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Locator lets visitors search for treatment programs by state, city, county, and ZIP Code.
  • The Buprenorphine Treatment Physician Locator helps visitors locate physicians who are authorized to treat opioid dependence with buprenorphine by state.
  • SAMHSA maintains a directory that lists contact information for state substance abuse agencies.
