RECOGNIZE an opioid emergency
- Person doesn’t respond to…
- Calling their name
- Grinding your knuckles on their breastbone
- Breathing is slow, shallow, or has stopped
- Snoring, choking, or gurgling noises
- Blue lips or fingertips
RESPOND to an overdose in 3 simple steps
When you recognize a possible overdose:
Time is of the essence- whichever of the first two steps can be done most quickly should be done first!
- Administer 1 dose of naloxone and
- Call EMS (911)
- Give rescue breathing and/or chest compressions- follow dispatcher’s instructions
Repeat Administer a second dose of naloxone if no response after 2‒3 minutes
Continue Providing rescue breathing and/or chest compressions
Put the person in the recovery position if you have to leave for any reason
- Position them on their left side
- Bend their top knee up
- Support their head with their hand
